I went through a few different pumps before finding the one I liked best. One of the biggest distinctions I found when it came to choosing a pump was that some are filled with oil and may leak, which could harm fish and make a mess of your pond. Others are fully sealed and use magnetic drive, which eliminates the risk of leaking oil into the pond. It turns out the magnetic drive is also more efficient and can provide longer, trouble free operation.
I finally landed on the Alpine pumps. This pump is the size I used for the pond fountain shown in the pictures on this site.

There are other sizes, and which you choose will depend on the size of the pond and how much water you want to move. From that page on Amazon, you can compare this pump to others in the Alpine line up.
